Awards
Over the years, the Hopkins Instrumental Music Department has received a steady stream of awards for both its band and orchestra groups. Through the hard work of the students and the dedication of its director, the department has become analogous with the word “award-winning.”
On March 11, 2010, Hopkins Junior High School Wind Ensemble was the “featured performer” at the California All-State Music Education Conference. The ensemble was 1 of only 2 bands invited statewide and the first music group from Fremont to ever perform at a State Conference! What an incredible achievement!
Since the first time CMEA hosted the Band and Orchestra Festival (also known as CMEA All-State Festival) in 2013, both Hopkins Wind Ensemble and Advanced Orchestra have been invited each year to participate along with a dozen of other top-performing groups in California. (Only ensembles having received a Unanimous Superior rating at their local festivals the previous season, and accepted by audition, are eligible for this privilege.) At the 2015 All-State Festival, Hopkins Wind Ensemble and Advanced Orchestra were 2 of only a few groups to again be rated Unanimous Superior there! In fact, in all the years of the All-State Festival, only Hopkins Wind Ensemble and Advanced Orchestra have received the coveted rating each year, out of the entire state of California!
While the year 2015 marks the first time that each of the 6 Hopkins ensembles (bands, orchestras, and jazz bands) received the highest possible Unanimous Superior rating at CMEA Festivals, 2010 was the first year that all 6 Hopkins ensembles received Superior ratings and First Place awards (as well as First Place Overall awards) at the Music in the Parks Festivals! In 2014, also at the Music in the Parks Festival, Hopkins Advanced Orchestra received a “‘perfect’ score of ‘100’” for three years in a row! This is the 6th time in the history of the festival that a group has earned that score, and 4 of them belong to Hopkins!
Hopkins Advanced Orchestra continues to maintain its reputation as one of the best Middle School String Orchestras in the state and in the nation. On February 17, 2012 (Fresno) and February 16, 2017 (San Jose), Hopkins Junior High School Advanced Orchestra was the “featured performer” at the California All-State Music Education Conference. At both conferences, Hopkins Advanced Orchestra was the only orchestra accepted statewide for the performance! In March 9, 2019, Hopkins Advanced Orchestra was rated “Unanimous Superior” and took 2nd place Middle School Division at the ASTA (American String Teachers Association) National Orchestra Festival held in Albuquerque, NM.
