2020-2021 Mission Attendance Area Elementary Beginning Bands Intent Form
Beginning Band classes will be offered during the 2020-2021 school year by the Hopkins Music Department.. These classes are open to all incoming 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade students of the Mission Area of FUSD (or the Mandarin/Spanish Immersion Programs) who have no Band instrument experience. All classes meet 1 day per week, for 1 hour, outside of the school day. Instructions are provided for woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.
NEW THIS YEAR: All Beginning Band classes will be hosted by the Hopkins Music Department, and taught by instructors provided by Hopkins. (More details will be coming when available.)
Also, all classes will be online to start this year until in person classes are allowed by FUSD.

General Information
- For students with NO EXPERIENCE on a “band instrument”.
- There is no limit to the number of students accepted and no prerequisites!
- Elementary Band Instruments: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Percussion (Drums and Mallets), Oboe, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone.
- Please do not rent/purchase instruments until after the first class meeting!
- Classes start in mid-late September
- Class meets at Hopkins Junior High School (online to start 2020-2021)
- Class times to be determined based on number of students enrolled
- One-time donation of $225 for the entire year of instruction (September to June)
- Some classes may have to be held online, as per the guidelines provided and periodically updated by FUSD.
Before acquiring an instrument whether through purchase or rental, Elementary Beginning Band students of the Mission Attendance Area should review the How to Select an Instrument guide to familiarize themselves with all the different Band instruments. This document provides a preliminary look at the possible instruments and their pros and cons. There will be an online “Instrument Fitting Event” for Beginning Band students to assist with instrument selection process in September!
